Behind the Scenes

Q&A with Chuck Leavell and Director Allen Farst

What was the genesis of this documentary?

[CL] It was a suggestion from several friends and associates that my story might make an interesting documentary. Specifically, the dichotomy of being a rock ‘n roll piano player and also a Tree Farmer, author, and advocate for the Environment. Also, my family story.

[AF] I was is Las Vegas shooting a commercial and had one night off. I got wind that the Rolling Stones were playing, so I called Chuck. 20 minutes later he called me back. Another 20 minutes later they canceled the show because Mick had laryngitis. So, it gave Chuck and I an opportunity to talk for a bit. During that discussion Chuck asked me if I had any interest in producing a documentary on him. I told him I was down on a knee! I knew Chuck’s story and thought there would be no better human on the planet that I would want to spend a few years with shinning a light on their story.

What does it mean to have this documentary made on your legendary career and body of work you have created?

[CL] For me, the most important part is to have a “document” for my family and for future generations of my family to know of the work my wife and I have done in our careers. Should others, such as those that have followed my career in music or in my environmental work, find it of interest, that would certainly be nice. Also, if it would help folks to increase their interest and knowledge in environmental and outdoor issues, that would also be a pleasant and positive result.

What was it like working with Allen over three years?

[CL] It was in 2015 that we first had a discussion about Allen taking the lead on the project. It might have been a year or so later that we began in earnest. Allen has been a joy to work with…and has put his heart, soul and talents into this effort. He has been diligent in the pursuit of getting things right and accurate, and in digging up facts, photos and footage. He has also done a “deep dive” in getting interviews with various musicians and artists I have worked with, as well as those in the forestry and environmental community that I have interacted with...as well as family members. I think he knows more about me now than I know about myself!

It takes a special person to interview over 80 big time legends in entertainment and get such great interviews- what were some of the comments/feedback you got from people after his time with them?

[CL] In the many interviews that Allen conducted with the various musicians, artists, foresters, environmental activists and others, without exception they have all told me how much they enjoyed the process and how respectful and easy it was to talk to him.

What were some of your favorite shoot dates or locations on the film?

[CL] Certainly our experience in Paris when we were on tour with the Stones and we got footage of my wife, Rose Lane, and I enjoying the city, floating up the Seine and just sharing special time together is a great memory, as well as the show itself in that amazing City of Lights. Also, the time spent on our land, walking and talking about our passion for the outdoors was fun and memorable.

Getting comments from folks like Mick, Keith, Ronnie and Charlie; Eric Clapton; David Gilmour; Don Was; President Carter; Sec. of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and so many others for the project was heartwarming for me.

[AF] For me, it would be those special times with Chuck and Rose Lane. Watching them look at each other like they are still in their twenties with puppy love. They are very sweet to each other. To also be at Charlane and experience it. Shooting in the woods, on tractors, soaking up what southern hospitality is, it’s just a very special experience as a filmmaker.

Additional Filmmaker Comments

[AF] From day one, Chuck opened the door to film with the most interesting people. From President Jimmy Carter to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Some of those music icons went above the call of duty.

David Gilmour filmed with me for three days at three different locations. Day one, was at his film premiere of “Pompeii” in London. Day two, was at his private music studio and day three was at his personal residence. We spent a long time in the woods and walking his property, sharing an apple off his fruit tree, and hours talking in his kitchen having tea.

Eric Church and his wife along with Marshal were another one. They gave us such great access to film some of the live performances we needed, both on stage and off.

Comments about Chuck Leavell

[AF] When you’re going to spend 3 years of your life filming someone, initially, you want to make sure it is the right person to shine a light on. I had known Chuck for about 15 year prior to starting this project and knew his story was worthy of this, however, after spending the last 3 years with him, I couldn’t be more proud of the man we feature. His story is so warm. He’s more than just talk and right now, we all need a little Chuck Leavell in our life.

I think it is obvious when you get the whole musical community rallying around him along with the work he has done, which is just remarkable. However, off the tour, his greatest achievement is taking care of Mother Earth.
